Six-year-old Oscar Banks was the star attraction at the Rosebank Bowling Club (RBC) in Wick last Saturday as he threw the first jack of the season.

Graham John, RBC elected president, said that for the last couple of years the club had been affected by Covid restrictions and this special opening event provided a chance to welcome back members.

"We've been preparing getting the green ready over the last couple of months," he said. "This is the official opening of the green today and people can come in on a daily basis now."

The day was one without competitions and was a relaxed affair with refreshments, a presentation, a raffle and a chance to meet and greet familiar faces and new members. "It's a very good atmosphere with decent people having a good time playing bowls."

Graham said that it is a great honour to throw the first jack and the oldest or youngest member is usually chosen. "Today we've got a young lad whose father and mother are members of the club. He's our youngest member."

Oscar had a practice throw the day before and pitched a perfect jack on the day to the delight of all the RBC members. Mark Banks, Oscar's dad and vice president of the club, said: "We're doing everything today to make sure people enjoy themselves and are happy."

RBC committee member Sharon Rosie had helped organise the special open day and said: "It was a good turnout, the weather stayed fair for us and overall it was a great day. There will be a quiz in the evening and the afternoon will be a chance for everybody to get used to the green after the winter season."
