Members of Thurso Camera Club ventured into the insect world for their 10th and final weekly challenge.

Club chairman James Gunn took first place with his close-up of a bee, but the overall winner of the competition was Alex Henderson who was consistently impressive over the 10 weeks.

The race for runner-up spot went down to the wire. By winning the "insects" challenge, James pipped Neil Buchan by a single point.

Week 10 leading places: 1 James Gunn, Honey maker, 110 points; 2 (joint) Julie Catterall, Wot, no cabbage?, and Alex Henderson, You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive, both 109 points; 4 Billy Husband, Fly, 106 points; 5 (joint) Carol Gunn, Going for gold, and Neil Buchan, Hoverfly in Dunnet Forest, both 99 points.

Final league standings after 10 rounds: 1 Alex Henderson, 81 points (4 wins); 2 James Gunn, 57 (2); 3 Neil Buchan, 56; 4 Jean MacKay, 55 (1); 5 Julie Catterall, 53 (2); 6 Jane Foster, 51; 7 Neil Holden, 43; 8 Ally MacKechnie, 41 (1); 9 Grant Coghill, 27; 10 Bob Murdoch, 22.

The club chairman said Alex was a worthy winner and that overall it had been an enjoyable experience for all the photographers.

"Many of the members have said they really enjoyed the challenges and that their photographic skills have improved over the 10 weeks," James said. "The challenges were very different and really made them think on how to try and compose an eye-catching image with the 'wow' factor.

"Alex Henderson was a winner by a country mile. Her artistic talent shone through to create some very different and stunning images.

"Her photo of the stitched apple in week one springs to mind and is a striking example of her imagination. Her high standard should bring up the standard of the rest of us, as we try to close the wide gap."
