Parliament must be recalled immediately, says MP Stone

NORTH MP Jamie Stone has said the UK parliament must be recalled immediately following this week’s legal ruling by Scotland’s highest civil court.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s suspension of parliament was deemed unlawful by a panel of three judges at the Court of Session who found in favour of a cross-party group of politicians who challenged the move.

The judges said Mr Johnson was attempting to prevent parliament holding the Government to account over Brexit.

Mr Stone, the Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, said: “A proper functioning democracy depends on the proper rule of law. I am not above it, no-one is above it – least of all Boris Johnson. This is a truly shocking state of affairs.

MPs should be sitting and holding the Government to account but Boris Johnson has decided to silence us.

“The court has agreed with us that proroguing parliament to force through a no-deal Brexit is unacceptable.

“At this crucial time MPs should be sitting and holding the Conservative government to account but Boris Johnson has decided to silence us until October 14.

“Now that this has been deemed unlawful parliament must be recalled immediately and MPs allowed to debate this judgement and decide what happens next.”

A UK Government appeal against the ruling will be heard by the Supreme Court in London next week.

The five-week suspension of parliament, or proroguing, started on Tuesday.
