Thurso’s Wolfburn Distillery has teamed up with the Carnegie Whisky Cellars to launch a limited-edition single malt whisky which will raise funds for Help for Heroes.

A total of 1939 bottles are being produced by Wolfburn and will be sold from the distillery and through the Carnegie Whisky Cellars in Dornoch. The project aims to raise a total of £10,000 for the armed forces charity.

The bottles are available from both businesses from today (October 9) for £79, and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis.

Supporting Wolfburn and Carnegie at the launch was para-athlete and weightlifter Micky Yule.

Formerly a staff sergeant in the Royal Engineers, Micky lost both legs while serving in Afghanistan, and has benefited from his association with Help for Heroes.

Micky put his disabilities behind him, used his rehabilitation as a springboard into para-athletic training, and won his first gold medal at the 2016 Invictus Games.

“Help for Heroes continue to do amazing work for veterans such as myself,” Micky said. “I’m proud to be part of this project, working with two of northern Scotland’s leading companies to raise much-needed funds. And the whisky tastes amazing too, which makes it all the better!”

Mark Westmorland, Wolfburn’s brand ambassador, said: “This is a project that we’re all very proud of. Help for Heroes is an excellent cause, and we’ve crafted a truly special dram for the occasion.

“It’s made from some of Wolfburn’s oldest spirit, matured in first-fill bourbon casks and subtly married with a small proportion of whisky matured in sherry casks, so it’s a lovely mix of sweet aromas and smoky flavours. It’s a truly beautiful dram.”

Michael Hanratty, manager of Carnegie Whisky Cellars, said: “The Help for Heroes project has generated a huge amount of excitement. Since we opened in 2016, Wolfburn’s whisky has been one of our best-selling brands, and this is our fourth partnering project and the second charity fundraising one.

“It’s an immense amount of fun, and all for a very good cause.”
