Thurso Players is delighted to announce that an event for its juniors took place recently – the first in nearly 18 months.

A small number of juniors attended a workshop recently, which helped them explore the heritage of the industrial building complex around their home at the Mill Theatre, opposite the swimming pool in Thurso.

This post-lockdown activity has been supported by the Caithness and North Sutherland Fund, and Watten Wind Farm Trust, whose funding will help with the installation of a display designed by the workshop children and to be positioned in the Mill Theatre lounge. Additional funding for this, and the acquisition of a camera and laptop, has also recently been secured from the RWE Bad á Cheò Wind Farm Community Fund (Halkirk).

Chair of Thurso Players, John Firth, said: "We are so grateful to our funders for backing this project and making this theatre activity possible for our juniors."

The workshop has been timed to coincide with the upcoming launch of the Players’ new website, developed by local firm, Navertech. This preceded a fundraising campaign by the theatre group to support the restoration of the recently acquired foundry building. Thurso Players will also be seeking views on creating a car parking area for shared usage off Millbank road.

An open day on September 18 will allow the public to look around the theatre, hear about the foundry building plans, answer public consultation questions and see the display materials. In addition to this, video footage of the work created by the children during the workshop will be on display.

Thurso born actor and creative, Sharon Mackay, who delivered the workshop in collaboration with Thurso Players juniors coordinator Maeva Donaldson and fellow creative and sound designer Neal Clark, commented: "It was fantastic to welcome the juniors back to the Mill, their creativity and passion for performance is a constant source of inspiration."

Thurso Players thank Sara Donaldson and Ewan Simpson for their support during the workshop.
