A BLAST from the past chugged into Wick Railway Station recently with a vintage train and carriages filled with weary passengers.

The crew set about pumping in water on the sunny Sunday afternoon as passengers took the opportunity to have a walk around the town. Some of the passengers were such eager train enthusiasts that they were even helping tidy the 12 British Rail mark 1 coaches, the earliest of which dates from 1955. The class 37 locomotives pulling the carriages date from the mid-1960s and one of the engines shunted to the rear in an operation that involved switching tracks.

Charles Paget, operations manager for Riviera Trains, had helped organise the Pathfinder Tour which he said ran "all the way up the spine of the country" from Eastleigh near Southampton to Wick and Thurso.

"We have two coaches that are just for train enthusiasts who follow the class 37 locomotives. These locomotives are the precursor to the 156 trains we have today."
