Nucleus event could lead to Caithness football reminiscence group
Moves are being made to set up a reminiscence group to share Caithness football memories.
An informal meeting is taking place at the Nucleus archive centre in Wick later this month to kick things off.
Archive assistant Valerie Amin explained: “On Wednesday, March 26, from 6pm to 8pm, Nucleus will be holding an evening of reminiscence for anyone that has been involved with local football over the years.
“There will be a display of documents and photographs from the Caithness Archive collections, and we are also encouraging anyone who comes along to bring their own photographs or memorabilia. There will be tea, coffee and biscuits.
“It will be very informal, and people can drop in at any time over the evening.
“The idea for a reminiscence evening grew from a desire to showcase the football-themed collections that have come into Nucleus’s care recently, and to encourage local people to visit the building who might not have had an excuse to so far.
“On the night we hope to gauge interest in making a Caithness football memories reminiscence group a regular thing.”
Valerie pointed out that over the past year or so a few football-themed collections have been deposited, thanks mainly to the “powers of persuasion” of Roy Mackenzie, a regular user of the archive.
These include Wick Academy papers from 1994-2007, match reports, programmes and photographs dating from the team’s entry to the Highland League.
The family of Dom Mulraine gifted his collection of photographs of Caithness football teams.
Angus Mackay, a former secretary of the Caithness Amateur Football Association, deposited his research project on the history of Wick Football Association following many hours of research in the archive.
He also deposited an updated version of Norman Glass’s History of Caithness Football: The First Eighty Years, 1886-1966, with many new and colourised photographs.
This is in addition to the Sinclair Mackay collection, deposited in 2019. It contains minute books, accounts and general correspondence from several local football organisations.
