Noss bike train ‘starting to gather over 100 cyclists consistently’
The Noss Primary School bike train is regularly attracting 100 or more cyclists.
The popular cycle-to-school initiative began last year, with children and adults joining at different points along the route from Staxigoe through various residential streets on the north side of Wick.
There were 121 people on the latest ride, on Friday morning.
The bike train was initially trialled as a partnership between the school and Cycling UK, a national active travel charity. Cycling UK is no longer operating in Caithness.
Noss head teacher Fraser Thomson said on Friday: “The weather is helping us build the number of people cycling to school each week. We had 121 this morning, which means we’re starting to gather over 100 cyclists consistently, each week.
“The number of pupils from the ELC is growing too, with parents/carers joining at points close to Noss and walking with their child to help them pedal or use balance bikes to get in.”
Louis from Noss ELC said: “I loved the bike train.”
The bike train stopped ahead of the October holidays as the mornings were becoming darker but was relaunched in the run-up to the Easter break.
A total of 118 pupils, staff, family members and friends took part in the first outing of 2025, at the start of April, led by volunteer George Ewing along with Mr Thomson.
The head teacher has described the bike train as “a great way to start the day”.
