A weekly cycle-to-school initiative has grown to such an extent that about a quarter of all pupils took part in the latest session.

Noss primary has seen numbers increase steadily for its school bike train in which pupils are accompanied by adult leaders.

It starts at Staxigoe, with youngsters joining at different points along the route through various residential streets on the north side of Wick.

The latest bike train saw 74 cyclists pedalling to school in glorious weather. “That’s 25 per cent of our school cycling in,” head teacher Fraser Thomson pointed out.

“More and more of our community are coming out to wave and say hello to the cyclists in the morning. We plan to do it each week until the October holiday and resume in late March when the lighter mornings return.”

The bike train is being trialled as a partnership between Noss Primary School and national charity Cycling UK. Pupils, family members and staff are welcome if they want to get involved.

It has been made possible by a grant of £15,875.41 that enabled Noss to buy cycles and equipment for the community to access free of charge. More than 30 bikes were acquired through Cycling UK and the UCI Legacy Cycle Share Fund.
