An open–air mass at the Old St Peter's Church, Thurso, is one of three special events being planned this summer by the Northern Pilgrims' Way Group (NPWG).

Taking the mass will be local Roman Catholic priest Father Colin Davies, and it is hoped the outside gathering, to be held on Saturday, July 3 at 12.30pm, will be free from restrictions. The pilgrimage events are being held during 2021 as it is the Year of the Pilgrim.

Secretary of the NPWG Jane Coll explained that various local priests/ministers and local councillors will be asked to take part in the mass along with the Moderator of the Church of Scotland who will give a short talk at the end.

She said: "As we do not know what regulations will be in place on the chosen dates, we are hoping to have the events recorded onto YouTube in case numbers are limited at a live event. The YouTube item will be called Northern Pilgrims Way Events."

A bus party of parishioners from Inverness on their annual Deanery pilgrimage are expected to be in attendance at the Thurso service which will be followed by refreshments and an information session about the Northern Pilgrims' Way.

The project to re-establish the medieval pilgrimage route between St Duthac's in Tain and St Magnus in Kirkwall has it’s roots in the Caithness Book Club.

Since forming, the group have produced a leaflet – The Northern Saints Trails – listing 33 names and 32 sites linked to the saints with a local connection. The sites were organised into six circular routes, four starting in Thurso and two in Wick.

Similar events are taking place in St Duthac's, Tain on May 29 at 2pm and in East Church, Kirkwall on August 20 at 12 noon.
