North Sutherland micro-bakery LOAF in top 18 list
An artisan micro-bakery in north Sutherland has scored a major coup.
Loaf has been named as one of Scotland’s top 18 bakeries by leading interiors and lifestyle brand, Homes and Interiors Scotland.
The list includes some of Scotland’s best known bakeries such as Dune in South Queensferry and Twelve Triangles in Edinburgh.
Strath Halladale baker Susan Wallace, who founded Loaf in 2020, said she was delighted with the accolade.
A former depute head teacher, Susan had built a reputation for producing delicious baked goods using traditional methods and the finest local, organic and traceable ingredients.
She won the coveted 1-star Great Taste Award in 2023 for her Mighty Morning Bun, made with a blend of seven ancient and heritage grains.
Loaf is also known for its award-winning House Blend sourdough.
Through her involvement in Scotland the Bread’s “People’s Bread” initiative, Susan bakes “The Daily Bread” on a pay what you can basis, ensuring that her artisan-quality bread is accessible to everyone.

Customers can taste for themselves Loaf’s award winning creations and the flavours that have earned Susan such recognition at a regular Saturday pop-up shop at Socially Growing, 1 Rotterdam Street, Thurso, from 2.30pm-4.30pm.
