NINE new cases of Covid-19 have been identified across the NHS Highland area in the past 24 hours.

The region’s cumulative number of confirmed infections rose from 5051 to 5060 when the Scottish Government published its latest daily figures on Wednesday.

There were 278 new positive tests for the virus across Scotland in the past day – or the equivalent of 1.3 per cent of all tests conducted during that period.

Some 119 people were receiving hospital treatment for the virus last night – this was down 14 from Tuesday’s update.

Of those, 20 were in intensive care, which is unchanged from yesterday.

And sadly three further deaths have been recorded among people who tested positive for the virus in the past 28 days.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north, there were no new confirmed cases in NHS Shetland, NHS Orkney or NHS Eileanan Siar.

NHS Grampian recorded 23 new infections, for a running total of 14,689.

And NHS Tayside’s overall tally rose by 16, to 14,477.

There have now been 222,660 confirmed cases recorded in Scotland since the pandemic began.

Almost 2.7 million Scots have now had their first Covid jag, while more than 634,000 have had their second injection.
