NINE new positive tests for Covid-19 were reported across the NHS Highland area over the past 24 hours.

The health board area's cumulative number of cases since the start of the pandemic rose to 956 when the latest daily update was published this afternoon.

Scotland as a whole detected 1401 new coronavirus infections in the past day – roughly 300 lower than in the previous 24-hour period.

But the number of Covid-19 patients requiring hospital care continued to rise, with the number of hospitalised cases increasing from 928 to 975 since yesterday's update.

Of those, some 76 people were in intensive care. This was an increase of two.

Another 18 people who previously tested positive for the virus have died.

Elsewhere in the north of Scotland, Shetland recorded no fresh Covid-19 cases since yesterday. However, Orkney detected two (for a cumulative total of 31) and the Western Isles reported one (for 65).

NHS Grampian, meanwhile, had 17 new positive tests for a running total of 3103.

There have now been 54,016 positive tests for Covid-19 across Scotland since the start of the pandemic.
