HOSPITALISED Covid patient numbers have reached the same level they were in the peak of the pandemic’s first wave, the First Minister has revealed.

Nicola Sturgeon revealed the information during her latest daily update at 12.15pm.

Some 1467 infected people are now receiving treatment in the country’s hospitals – a rise of 83 from this time yesterday, and roughly the same level as back in the spring of 2020.

The number of those in intensive care – which increased by five, to 100 – is still well below that same peak.

But the First Minister warned that the figures clearly showed the extreme pressure that the NHS is under and urged people to stay safe and stick to lockdown rules to stop the spread of the deadly virus.

She said: “It is under severe and increasing pressure. So the more we all stay at home to prevent the spread, the more we protect the NHS”.

She continued: “Please, I’m asking, heed this message... stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives. That message is as important now as it was [last spring]”.

She also confirmed that were were a further 2649 positive tests for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours – representing 11.3 per cent of all tests carried out over that period.

It means Scotland has now detected 143,715 confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Health board specific figures will not be released until 2pm.

Meanwhile, the First Minister also revealed that 113,459 people across Scotland have now received their first vaccination jab.

She added that the country was also more than half way through the vaccinations of care home residents.

And she added that more than 1100 vaccination sites will go live across Scotland from next week.
