New sea kayaks help make a splash at Caithness club

Pentland Canoe Club has just bought two new sea kayaks to help cater for a recent spike in its membership.

The additions to its fleet were made possible through support from Club Sport Caithness (formerly Caithness Sports Council) and retailer Go Kayaking, as well as the club’s own fundraising.

They will enable individuals without their own equipment to take part in the sport.

Gary Youngson, who chairs the Thurso-based club, said: “The club is extremely grateful for the support received to assist in the purchase of the kayaks.

“With a growing membership, these two kayaks will help people into the sport who might otherwise not have had the opportunity.”

Mr Youngson said the club is committed to encouraging safe participation and expanding opportunities for all.

Club Sport Caithness chairman Ron Gunn said: “We are here to try and support the many sports clubs and organisations in Caithness.

“We are delighted to have been able to help Pentland Canoe Club purchase an additional two kayaks. These UK-built kayaks will be put to good use by the club as they will allow more of its members to take part in sea kayaking.”

Ellen Warley, of Go Kayaking, said: “It’s great to hear about the work that Pentland Canoe Club is doing to get new people into the sport and we’re delighted that we could help in some small way.

“Having access to a wide range of sizes and styles of boat will give new paddlers a great introduction to kayaking and ultimately their continued interest in the sport.”

To further support its increasing membership, the club is embarking on an ambitious project to buy 12 more sea kayaks and 15 paddles.

It is designed to promote greater accessibility and inclusion by ensuring more people can enjoy paddle sports along the stunning coastlines of Caithness and north Sutherland.

The club’s winter training sessions in Thurso swimming pool are scheduled to start shortly.
