New crossing built over Culgower burn on John O’Groats Trail in Sutherland
A new bridge has been built over the Culgower burn - on the John O’ Groats Trail between Brora and Helmsdale - following the award of funding.
The new bridge replaces a previous structure, which was washed away during Storm Babette in October 2023.
A post on the John O’Groats Trail social media page says: “When in spate, this crossing could always be tricky and had the unfortunate habit of collecting lobster creels, which would push and pull at the previous bridge.”

Local contractor Anthony Urquhart and volunteers built the new bridge last week. Much stronger than the former bridge, it has been positioned higher in order to allow flotsam and jetsam to pass through.
The work was funded by the North Highland Initiative.
The John O’Groats Trail has thanked Gow Groundworks for co-ordinating, delivering, and dropping off the telegraph poles used to build the bridge, as well as Steven Lowe and Liam Elder of SSE for allocating the poles.
Edward Mackay Contractor Ltd donated materials for the job, and landowner Garry Macdonald helped Mr Urquhart install the supports.
