North Coast 500 (NC500) is encouraging motorhome and caravan users to follow the relevant advice and guidance for the benefit of local communities and other visitors.

The marketing organisation for the route has issued a reminder to visitors touring the north Highlands this summer of the ‘dos and don’ts’.

Some of its key advice includes:

  • 'Wild Camping' does not apply to motorised vehicles, including caravans and motorhomes. Under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, wild camping only applies when camping by foot, bike or other non-motorised transport.
  • If you decide not to stay at a formal campsite, then you must ensure that you are parking responsibly in an area that allows overnight parking.
  • Ensure drivers of motorhomes and caravans are used to driving large vehicles and that the vehicle can be driven safely (including reversing) on single track roads.
  • Scottish access rights, and the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, do not apply to motor vehicles.
  • Do not empty any chemical toilet waste anywhere other than at a designated chemical waste area. And when hiring a caravan or motorhome, make sure the hire company demonstrates how to empty and maintain any on-board waste facilities.

Craig Mills, operations director for North Coast 500, said: “Experiencing the North Coast 500 by motorhome or caravan has become a popular way for visitors to enjoy all that the North Highlands has to offer. However, it is important that these users are well prepared for their visit and follow the appropriate advice and guidance.”

Further guidelines and advice for travelling the NC500 by motorhome or caravan can be found on the NC500 website.
