The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge applauded their beloved Aston Villa’s 7-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday evening.

The royal couple, who are long-standing Villa fans, retweeted the club’s comment about it being a “night to remember” with an applause emoji to show their support.

Aston Villa brought champions Liverpool’s 100% start to the Premier League season to a shuddering halt with the stunning win at Villa Park, thanks in part to a first-half hat-trick by Ollie Watkins.

With three wins from three games, Dean Smith’s Villa are up to second place in the table, level on points with Liverpool – who have played four matches – plus Leicester and Arsenal.

The Duke of Cambridge was spotted celebrating at Wembley when Aston Villa scored to give themselves hope in the League Cup final in March, before lockdown hit.

When football returned in June, William thanked those involved in getting the Premier League going again as Aston Villa prepared to face Sheffield United in the first game of the restart.

A tweet from the royal couple’s account said: “So good to have football back, we have all missed it! Thank you to everyone involved for your hard work in making it happen. W.”
