All in a day's work for Tarzan the wonder horse
TARZAN found himself the centre of attention in woodland at Evanton last week as he came face to face with scores of schoolchildren paying a visit to see him at work.
The 10-year-old powerhouse French-bred horse was in the community woodland to drag timber felled there to build another shelter deeper within the well-used forest.
Simon Harry, education co-ordinator at Evanton Community Woods, welcomed children from neighbouring Kiltearn Primary and Tarbat Old Primary, as well as participants in a group set up to work with people living with dementia.
The Thursday event, which saw Tarzan patiently enjoy the attentions of visitors of all ages, was then followed by a community open day on Saturday which saw around 150 people turn up over the course of the day.
Mr Harry said: "Tarzan and his owner Simon Dakin, who works in forestry, did an incredible job. We used a horse here because of the minimal environmental impact it would have and, to be honest, you’d hardly know they’d been here. He weighs about a ton and can pull up to 600kg."
The timber will be used to make a bandstand-style shelter to expand community use of the wood. Potential uses include ceilidhs and wedding ceremonies.
Pupils at Tain Royal Academy meanwhile have been peeling the wood using special tools.
The local Co-op also chipped in with drinks, a stall and a raffle while greenwood crafters found themselves busy all day making a variety of items.
It promises to be a busy summer at Evanton with the woods playing a part in a number of school holiday courses operated through High Life Highland.
