Pupils, staff and families gathered at Noss Primary School in Wick to celebrate the 2024/25 session while saying a fond farewell to a retiring pupil support assistant.

Head teacher Fraser Thomson welcomed the audience and said: “There has been much to celebrate as a result of the application and enthusiasm of the pupils, amazing staff team and ongoing support of families at Noss.”

Mr Thomson also spoke of “opportunities to learn and make things better to ensure that the school and ELC continue to grow”.

Earlier in the week, the school had served its 6000th breakfast of the session – which is 1500 more than this time last year – as a result of the free breakfast club it offers each day.

Noss said goodbye to Fiona Mackay, who retires at the end of the session. Mrs Mackay started her career in the Hillhead nursery in 1996 and worked there until it closed in 2016, moving to Noss as part of the amalgamation of Hillhead and North primaries.

Mr Thomson described Mrs Mackay as “a key member of our team who has supported our current and former pupils over the years”, including some of our current staff team at Noss.

The head teacher acknowledged the exceptional service Mrs Mackay had given to the community and wished her well in retirement.

P3 and P3/4 treated the audience to their Caithness Music Festival performances, while Jack Beattie and Saoirse MacLeod recited their poems.

Albert and Alexander Jakobik played the piano along with Karley Dunnett.

Mr Thomson spoke about the development of the school house system and how it is making a positive impact on the school ethos. A number of house challenges and sporting events have provided fun and competitive opportunities.

These competitive opportunities and the increased number of activities have helped develop physical and social skills, he said, building an understanding of what it takes to win and how to deal with disappointment. Gunn and Halberry were joint winners of the house competition.

The school gathered to say goodbye the P7 pupils, and children from across the school received awards for their endeavours across the year.
