MORE than 60 people were being treated for the Covid-19 coronavirus in Highland hospitals overnight – and six were in intensive care, according to new Scottish Government figures.

The news that 61 people were in the region's hospitals at midnight came as the number of confirmed Highland cases rose 10 to 122.

Across Scotland as a whole, some 1771 people were being treated in Scottish hospitals with confirmed or suspected Covid-19 at midnight last night. Of those, 210 were being treated in intensive care.

The number of people testing positive across Scotland also rose another 336 to 4565.

And sadly another 70 people have died from the virus – taking the total Scottish toll to 366. Sixteen of those deaths have occurred in the NHS Highland area.

Elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there are now 223 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the NHS Grampian area (up 13 since yesterday), 43 positive tests in Shetland (up one) and still fewer than five cases apiece in Orkney and the Western Isles.

In NHS Tayside there were a further 70 confirmed cases since yesterday, taking the total to 586.

The Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS area continues to be the worst hit, with 1166 confirmed cases (up 72). Some 555 people were also being treated in its hospitals for the virus, with 62 in intensive care.
