A missing Caithness man whose disappearance sparked an extensive coastal search amid concern for his welfare has been found "safe and well".

Police confirmed late last night that George Newlands (49) had been traced.

In an update shortly before 11pm, a spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Following our recent appeal, George Newlands, who was reported missing from the Wick area, has now been traced safe and well.

"Thank you to everyone that shared our appeal."

Rescue teams had been mobilised after the Coastguard received "a report of concern" at around 9.25am on Monday.

The search which followed involved the Coastguard's search-and-rescue helicopter, Wick's RNLI lifeboat, and coastguard rescue teams from Wick, Duncansby and Scrabster.

A second helicopter and the RNLI's Longhope lifeboat were also later drafted in to help in the search, with police saying they were "increasingly concerned" for Mr Newlands' welfare.

But the search had a happy outcome, with the police confirming Mr Newlands was "safe and well" in their update late last night.
