The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for tonight and tomorrow morning for ice, covering most of the Highlands and all of Moray.

Beginning at 9pm today until 10am tomorrow, the yellow ice warning covers the whole east coast of Scotland, stretching as far west as Glen Moriston, Inverlael and Tongue.

Forecasters are predicting that ice will form on untreated surfaces, perhaps causing some transport disruption and increasing the chance of accidents.

In the weather warning, the Met Office advised that you might expect “some icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, leading to tricky driving conditions and increasing the risk of accidents and injuries.”

According to the forecasters, a band of rain and snow will move east across Scotland this afternoon and evening (December 3). Once this clears, temperatures will quickly fall during the evening and ice is likely to form readily on untreated surfaces during the evening and overnight into Wednesday morning.

Met Office advice for staying safe during the adverse weather is: “Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls.

”If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.

”Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

”Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
