A new festival focusing on women's health issues will feature an opening speech by Maree Todd – the MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross who is minister for public health, women's health and sport in the Scottish Government.

The We WANT Festival is being run by Thurso Community Development Trust (TCDT) in the Olrig Street gardens on Saturday, between 11am and 4pm. Fringe events have already been taking place during the week, including a foraging walk with Amanda Greig of Thurso East Honesty Box and a talk on endometriosis with co-organiser Kirsteen Campbell.

The festival is aimed at "women, trans, non-binary and gender-nonconforming people and the men who support them”.

It will get under way officially at 11am on Saturday with Ms Todd's speech. Guest speakers at the festival will include her fellow SNP MSP Emma Roddick.

Speakers will cover various topics relating to women’s health, such as endometriosis and specific cancers.

Food and refreshments will be available, while activities during the day will include yoga, tai chi, Kuk Sool, art projects and green health walks.

Grace Nicoll of Moray Firth Radio will present a DJ set between 2pm and 4pm.

The afternoon events will be followed by a ceilidh in the Pentland Hotel, from 7.30pm to 11pm, with music from Addie Harper and friends. Tickets are on sale from the TCDT website and the zero-waste refill shop Socially Growing, and will be available on the door on the night.

All up to date information can be found on the TCDT website and on its Facebook and Instagram. The trust can also be contacted by phone on 01847 867310.
