A Wick man who punched a woman outside a local shop has been warned that any future offending would see him jailed.

Graham Bain admitted the offence and having a record when he appeared at Wick Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old grabbed Corinna Ness outside the One Stop Shop in Wellington Street, Wick, on August 4, last year.

He was said to have grabbed her with both hands after they exchange words, and punched her on the head to her injury.

Solicitor Josey Donachie said that Bain, of Breadalbane Terrace, Wick, had been heavily under the influence of drink and drugs at the time.

She said the pair had spoken on the phone a few days earlier and added that when they met at the shop Bain "just saw red".

Sheriff Andrew Berry noted Bain's history of offending and continued: "Here we are again with you assaulting someone at a public place while under the influence of drink and drugs, a combination which don't agree with one another.

"Who knows where you are going to end up unless you address your abuse of drunk and drugs."

The sheriff said there was no point in obtaining a background report, commenting: " I would probably have been able to write it myself – with due respect to our social workers."

Bain was ordered to carry out 90 hours of unpaid community work but Sheriff Berry warned that if he was to return to court on a future occasion, it would be 'inevitable' that a prison sentence would follow.
