A north Sutherland man who was said to have acted out of character when he assaulted a woman in a Wick house has been given a chance by a sheriff.

Thomas Mackay was said to have lashed out at the woman at the house in Grant Street on April 13, last year, and punched her on her head to her injury.

The 61-year-old, of Kirtomy, Bettyhill, pleaded guilty at Wick Sheriff Court last month when his solicitor said that the incident had occurred during a period of "stresses and strains".

Fiona MacDonald added that there were underlying issues involved and suggested that Mackay required help rather than punishment.

Sheriff Andrew Berry considered a background report when the accused appeared for sentence last week and commented that he seemed to have an insight into his behaviour and had acted "out of character".

Sentence was deferred for six months to allow Mackay to demonstrate he can behave.
