The indictment alleges that the 29-year-old hit another man on the head with the bat and repeatedly struck him with the knife after he fell to the floor.

He is also accused of uttering threats to kill the man at a house in Holborn Avenue, Thurso, on July 23, 2023.

Long faces further charges of threatening or abusive behaviour towards a woman at the same address and of being in possession of cannabis.

He has also entered pleas of not guilty to both of those charges.

The prosecution and defence will lodge a joint minute of agreement of some of the evidence prior to the trial which is expected to last between two and three days.
