Santa's elves are set to help bring a little festive cheer in Caithness by delivering Christmas Eve boxes.

Only announced a week ago on social media, the special doorstep delivery service is already proving very popular with local parents.

The service is being offered by the Wick Christmas Lights Committee, and will cover rural areas too, including Watten and Halkirk.

Group chairman Claire Mackenzie felt that it would be a good idea this year with everything being a little different and other festive events being put on hold.

"We have lost out on Fun Day which is such a big day for the town, it brings so many people together," she said. "I thought what else can we do that is safe and will bring a little Christmas cheer to the town - we have elves, lets make it magical."

She explained that nowadays lots of parents give out Christmas Eve boxes to their children with things such as festive pyjamas, chocolates, games and books.

"Parents can drop off their completed boxes to us and then we will deploy our elves - helping to keep Christmas magical and keeping the fairytale alive," said Mrs Mackenzie. "The feedback has been amazing. I wasn't sure it would take and now I am frantically searching to make sure we have enough drivers."

The group are keen to hear from more volunteers who would be able to help with transport for the elves on Christmas Eve.

The organiser said: "The more people we can rope in, the more we can deliver. We are very lucky that we do live in such a generous community, people will give you time and donations."

Although there will be no Fun Day this year, the switching on of the Wick Christmas lights, which will be done on Saturday, November 28, will be done live through the group's Faceboook page.

Volunteers have been working on the lights at Santaland up at Wick's Rosebank Playing Fields – the winter wonderland will also be lit up on November 28.

In addition, children in Wick will be able to enjoy Santa's Sleigh which will be going ahead during the first two weeks of December.

"We are hoping to try and spread a little happiness," added Mrs Mackenzie. "So many people have got their Christmas decorations up, it is lovely to see."

There is still time for parents to put in their requests to the local elves for a Christmas Eve box delivery.
