LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! Caithness pupils can now study film at school
Caithness pupils are set to benefit from a brand new Film and Screen curriculum, now available to schools for the first time.
The SNP Scottish Government says it commits to expanding opportunities for young people and that the curriculum will allow young people to study Film and Screen as a practical subject and gain insight into all aspects of it.
A suite of resources has been produced for learners aged 3-18, setting out the skills and knowledge expected at each stage. Two new formal qualifications: SQA Awards in Film and Screen at Levels 5 and 6 (the latter equivalent to Highers) have been successfully trialled.
The pioneering programme has been developed by Screen Scotland, with support from Education Scotland and the Scottish Government, and has already reached more than 6000 pupils across early years, primary and secondary schools in a pilot scheme across 30 local authorities, including Highland Council.
The curriculum has received widespread endorsement from Scotland’s creative talent, including James McAvoy, Martin Compston, Edith Bowman, Sanjeev Kohli and many others.
Caithness, Sutherland and Ross MSP Maree Todd said: “This is a hugely exciting step for young people here in the Highlands. Film and Screen will give pupils the chance to develop vital skills, from teamwork and problem solving to creativity and confidence, while opening doors to Scotland’s growing screen industries for the next generation of Scottish talent.
“I am delighted that this world-first curriculum has been shaped with input from schools across the Highland Council area. I look forward to seeing how our young people take advantage of these opportunities.
“The SNP is determined to invest in our young people, giving them the skills, confidence and opportunities they need to thrive in the future. This new curriculum is another example of how we are delivering for Scotland’s next generation.”
