A LATHERON man has been jailed for nine months after breaking into a house and stealing items from it.

John Hastings appeared on indictment at Wick Sheriff Court for sentence having pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing.

The 42-year-old broke into Parkview Terrace, Latheronwheel on August 1, 2014 and stole two jackets, a motorbike helmet, three mobile phones and a bottle of alcohol.

Solicitor Ross Brown said Hastings, of Cairndhuna Terrace, Wick, had to deal with a heroin addiction as a young man.

Sheriff Andrew Berry said: “This type of offence is relatively unusual in this part of the country. People feel in certain instances able to leave their doors and motor vehicles unlocked.

“There is no alternative but a custodial sentence here because of the nature of the offence and your history of offending.”
