Hope for Thurso Hogmanay street party fades
Thurso is not, after all, to have a street party to take in the bells at the turn of the year.
A group of volunteers had got together earlier this year to revive the Hogmanay bash, which was one of the victims of the Covid pandemic.
Preliminary preparations had been made and John Thurso had agreed to be the guest of honour, as he had been at the Millennium party, which was the first of the modern-day celebrations.
But the event, which was again due to be staged in Princes Street opposite Sir John’s Square, has been dropped because of a lack of volunteers to serve on Thurso Hogmanay Street Hoolie.
The would-be treasurer of the ad hoc committee Veda Johnstone said: “I’m afraid there is not going to be a Hogmanay street party in the town this year.
“For one reason or another, people who were going to help out had to drop out and we didn’t get the support we had been hoping for from the group that had been running the previous parties.”
Ms Johnstone said she hoped to help encourage more interest to run a street party at the end of 2026.
