An Aberdeen family are getting on their bikes to honour a Wick man who passed away last year.

George Mortimer had long planned to do a cycle from Aberdeen to his old home town of Wick.

However, George was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died in September 2018.

Determined not to let George's wish not be fulfilled, his wife Brenda, along with daughters Amee and Lisa, son-in-law Callum, brother-in-law Tom, niece Lauren and her husband Graham and nephew Scott are cycling 275 miles from the family home in Aberdeen to George's Wick birthplace.

Aside from completing the cycle ride that George was unable to embark upon, the Mortimer family are hoping to raise awareness and money for Pancreatic Cancer Scotland.

They will set off on September 4 with a view to arriving on September 6 – a year to the day that George passed away.

I am thrilled and also very emotional that the family will be doing it together.

Brenda said: "Upon retiring, George had planned to train for and complete the cycle from Aberdeen to Wick with Graham.

"He had always wanted to do this as that is where we are from. Sadly he never got to do it, so I am thrilled and also very emotional that the family will be doing it together.

"I’ll not be cycling but I will be the support team along with my sister-in-law Bibis and brother-in-law Jackie who is coming over from the United States to help.

"Graham will be cycling George's bike and everyone will arrive in Wick on the first anniversary of George's death.

"We want to celebrate the loving and generous man he was and hope to make him proud."

A Just Giving page in support of Pancreatic Cancer Scotland is open in memory of George at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/georgemortimer

Murray Easton, head of fundraising and supporter relations at Pancreatic Cancer Scotland, said: "We are extremely grateful to Brenda and all of her family for thinking of Pancreatic Cancer Scotland and greatly admire their passion and determination to take this challenge on in memory of George."
