With heartthrob stars like Sam Heughan, and many stunning Highland locations, its fans have described it as a real gem.

But now a small company has been selected to make the first UK-licensed Outlander jewellery.

Aurora Jewellery based at St Ola on Orkney has launched a new line based on the hit TV show, through a collaboration with Sony Pictures Consumer Products.

Outlander, based on the books by Diana Gabaldon, follows Claire Fraser, a time-travelling doctor from the 20th century, and her husband Jamie Fraser, a Scottish Highlander from the 18th century.

Steven Cooper, owner of Aurora Jewellery, said Orkney's abundant links with the past had led to agents for Sony contacting it "out of the blue".

“Our existing range of jewellery and tartans are greatly inspired by the islands’ history and culture, so the Outlander theme was the perfect fit for us," he said.

“And, since we are also fans of the series, it has been an absolute pleasure to work on the new range.”

He picked a 23-year-old local model Aileen Bain to show off the range, which includes a £135 silver brooch and a £355 silver bangle. Pewter scarf rings and brooches range from £32.50 to £50.

Aurora Jewellery, which has 12 employees, has been operating for 22 years and its other collections include those inspired by the islands' famous prehistoric Ring of Brodgar.

Mr Cooper said it had already had inquiries for its new range – based on the Craigh na Dun stones in Outlander – from around the world including Australia and Spain.

It was currently awaiting approval from Sony for extending the range with additional pieces.

Jamie Stevens of Sony Pictures Entertainment said: “Created in the beautiful Orkney Islands, Aurora Jewellery is uniquely suited to offer the Outlander fans product they want.

“We hope that this program will lead to more amazing products and licensees to come on board.”
