A Notice of Election is published for two by-election to replace departed Highland councillors in Caithness and in Inverness with the vote set for August 12

The notice of election has been published for two Highland Council by-elections, for the Wick and East Caithness and the Inverness West wards, set to take place on Thursday, August 12.

Former Wick and East Caithness councillor Nicola Sinclair resigned to take up a job in journalism, while Inverness West ward member Graham Ross departed for personal reasons.

The returning officer for the elections is Highland Council chief executive Donna Manson and she has encouraged people to put themselves forward as candidates.

She said: “As an inclusive council and to provide greater representation of the diversity in our council we encourage prospective candidates from all backgrounds to come forward.

“Information can be found on our website but you can also drop us an email election@highland.gov.uk for more information or an informal chat.”

Nomination packs are available from the council website and the closing for nominations is 4pm on Friday, July 9.

Completed nomination papers must be delivered to the appropriate deputy returning officer by prior appointment between 10am and 4pm on weekdays.

Anyone over 16 years old who lives in either of the two wards is eligible to take part if they are registered to vote, which can be done by through the UK government site.

Alternatively, they can call the electoral registration officer on 0800 393 783 to request a paper application form, the last day to register to vote in the by-elections is Monday, July 26.

Voters will be able to cast their vote in person on the day at a polling station or they can apply for either a postal vote or to vote by proxy.

The latest time to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Tuesday, July 27, and the deadline for anyone wishing to appoint a proxy, which is someone to vote on their behalf, is Wednesday, August 4.
