The most common features of weather like clouds, rain, snow and fog arise when, because of cooling, the water vapour condenses to liquid, or sometimes to solid form.

Water vapour, although it is in quantity only a small constituent of the atmosphere, is nevertheless the most important in terms of the weather.

Water vapour gets into the air by evaporation primarily from the oceans, and to a lesser extent other bodies of water such as rivers, lakes and lochs. Vegetation also provides a large amount of water vapour from its leaves. This supply is sourced from the soil, through the roots.

The physical process responsible for this is called transpiration. Most of the water is returned to the Earth from the troposphere as rain or snow. The continuous process of exchange of water between the land, oceans and atmosphere is called the Earth's water cycle.
