The latest book from Caithness-based Whittles Publishing tells of one man’s life of adventure – and danger – in some of the most forbidding landscapes on the planet.

Author, photographer and explorer Peter Clutterbuck recounts a number of high-risk expeditions in Across the Edge, from being stuck in a blizzard in Antarctica to finding himself surrounded by a 17-strong pride of lions in Africa.

He also tells of rolling a Land Rover in the Arabian desert and recalls a lava-flow emergency, among other escapades.

Peter’s love of adventure developed as a child growing up within the British Army. His thirst for adventure and his work as an engineer in the energy sector have taken him to more than 100 countries.

He sailed single-handedly across the Pacific, scaled previously unclimbed mountains in the Arctic and Antarctic, crossed the Empty Quarter of Arabia and dived in the Indian Ocean.

But his journeys often came at a cost, with crises along the way in parts of the world where meticulous planning can be the difference between life and death.

His stories come with a warning: that urgent action must be taken to preserve these regions for future generations. He also says pollution must be reduced.

Many of the trips undertaken in the book were completed by sail and on foot, using wind and manpower, leaving a minimal carbon footprint.

Peter’s journeys have had media coverage in publications such as Alpine Journal, Yachting World, The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph, and on TV. His work has also featured in 11 video productions.

Across the Edge, by Peter Clutterbuck, is published by Whittles Publishing of Dunbeath (£19.99, softback). It has 240 pages and is illustrated with seven maps and more than 190 photos.
