Gunn to stage writers' workshops in Thurso
CAITHNESS poet and playwright George Gunn is staging a season of writers' workshops which will run until April next year.
The workshops, which got under way on Tuesday night, are the third to be held under the Ravenskald banner.
Gunn, who was at the Scottish Parliament last week to read at the Hamish Henderson centenary event, said: "These workshops are designed to support writers who have a specific project, in any form or stage of development, to help them to stay on track and to either complete the work in hand or to progress the project if, for whatever reason, it has stalled. Or they may have an idea that is just forming in their mind and are not sure what form it will take. Or they might just want to try something new.
"If so, then the Ravenskald Writers' Workshop is the place for them."
He added: "All writers have an abundance of ideas and these workshops will offer constructive suggestions and examples of how to structure their writing time so that they can maximise the energy necessary to create.
"The strength of the Ravenskald workshop is in its members and each session will be structured to suit the needs of the writers, their creative project, their attitude to their work, their achievements and struggles.
"The workshop is a place that recognises that the writer has, by the nature of the art, to work on their own but also proclaims that no writer needs to be alone. So come along and share your work and listen to the work of others. Be reassured – there are other creative souls out there just like you."
Gunn, who comes from Dunnet and lives in Thurso, is an award-winning poet and playwright. His New and Selected poems, After The Rain, was published last year. His next play, Call Me Mister Bullfinch, has been commissioned by the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, and will be performed next year. He recently received a Creative Scotland award for his forthcoming play The Fallen Angels of the Moine.
This year he also received an award from the Society of Authors for his second novel In Nine Worlds.
The workshops run for two hours from 7 to 9pm and are held every second week at Cardosi's café in Thurso. They run until April 7 next year.
