An ebike similar to one of those that will be available for trial from Caithness Voluntary Group for a few days at a time.

Caithness Voluntary Group will be giving local residents a chance to try out an ebike after teaming up with Home Energy Scotland (HES).

We are due to receive two bikes on August 10 and will be offering people a trial for three to four days at a time. Equipment will be provided with the loan.

Each ebike will be checked over by a trained mechanic and will hopefully give many hours of enjoyment, whether people use it for leisure or work, as well as encouraging them to think about the benefits of sustainable transport.

HES – which is managed by Energy Saving Trust (EST) – offers free, impartial advice on greener travel as well as energy-saving, keeping warm at home and renewable energy. The ebikes remain the property of EST at all times, and a loan bicycle can be recalled at any time if it is felt that better use of it could be made by someone else.

If you are interested in trying an ebike and are over 18 years, please email yvonne@cvg.org.uk. Social distancing measures in line with Scottish Government advice will be followed during drop-off, maintenance and collection.

At the chosen location the adviser will wipe the bike down to disinfect, then step well back to allow you to take the ebike while maintaining a two-metre distance at all times. It is advised you wipe down the ebike with a kitchen disinfectant spray or warm soapy water prior to use.

Groups are invited to apply to the Tesco Community Grant scheme via the Wick store.

Currently the scheme will award grants to charities and community organisations to fund local good causes whose focus is on supporting children, young people and families or on tackling food insecurity (through activities such as food-growing, older people's lunch clubs, food banks and breakfast clubs).

Applications are being sought through the Wick store for food insecurity themed activity.

Funding pots of £500, up to £1000 and up to £1500 will be available for projects and Tesco customers will be able to choose which project receives the most funding by voting in store every time they shop.

If your application is successful, this is a good opportunity for your group’s profile to be highlighted in a public place for a good length of time and you could arrange other fundraising initiatives around that voting period.

The scheme is open to registered charities and community organisations via an online application form, with a guidance notes, which you can find at https://tescocommunitygrants.org.uk/apply-for-a-grant

Your local community enabler can assist you with making an application. If you would like extra support, contact Tamara on 07825 671968 or email tamara@greenspacescotland.org.uk

She will be away until July 28 but her out-of-office will be passed on to a colleague who can assist.

If you have received an award before, please ensure you have submitted a completion report for that one before making your next application. The previous applicant needs to log back into their online application/award account.

If this doesn’t help then contact Groundwork, the organisation that manages the application and award process, on 0121 237 5780, or email tescobagsofhelp@groundwork.org.uk
