Gail Ross MSP named as red squirrel champion

By SPP Reporter

FAR north MSP Gail Ross has earned a new title after being named as a species champion for one of Scotland’s most iconic animals.

The Holyrood representative for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross was given the title as part of an initiative run by Scottish Environment LINK with a range of species as diverse as bottlenose dolphins to the flame shell.

As a champion of the red squirrel, Mrs Ross has been tasked with raising the profile of the species across the country which she is looking forward to undertaking.

She said: "I am delighted to be named as the species champion for such an important animal as the red squirrel.

"It is truly an icon of Scotland.

"I look forward to the opportunity as this will give me the chance to find out more about the pressures and opportunities that face red squirrels both in my constituency and wider Scotland."
