Busy programme ahead for Wick Gala Week 2019

WICK Gala Week officially kicks off on Saturday with the traditional crowning of the gala queen. Guest speaker is the Lord-Lieutenant of Caithness, Lord Thurso.

The procession through the town of decorated floats and costumed walking entries will follow and the presentation of prizes will take place at 9.30pm in the Assembly Rooms.

Organisers on the gala committee are promising a fun-filled week of activities culminating in the bonfire and firework display at the riverside on Saturday, August 3.

Wick harbour is again the venue for the blessing of the fleet service this Sunday (July 28) at 3pm and all are welcome to attend.

The scarecrow competition will be judged at 2pm on Friday (July 26). The best garden competition will also be judged on Friday and a gala raffle will run with the top prize of £250.

A "number hunt" will see 20 numbers concealed throughout the town with entry forms available at the community campus, priced at £1. A trophy will be awarded for the best dressed shop window with a pipe band theme.

Other events include an autocross at Bilbster Farm on Sunday and a gin-tasting night at the Assembly Rooms that same evening at 7.30pm. On Monday (July 29) will be a pirate-themed picnic and a summer show, both in the Assembly Rooms. The children's fancy dress will be on Tuesday (July 30) at the Braehead.

Wednesday (July 31) sees a one-day exhibition of photos in St Fergus Church Hall from the McDonald archive from 2-7pm and a Scottish variety show at the Pipe Band Hall at 7.45pm.

A "superhero hunt" for kids is on Thursday (August 1) and on Friday, August 2, there will be vintage films of the town showing at the herring mart in the afternoon and a Strictly Come Dancing event at the Assembly Rooms at 7pm.
