Free online event will teach you conservation techniques for old pictures and documents
Caithness Family History Society’s (CFHS) February meeting will feature a presentation by Richard Aitken, senior conservator with the Highland Archive Service.
His job consists of helping look after the extensive collection of documents, maps, photographs and films held at the four archive centres in the Highland region. These are the Nuclear and Caithness Archives in Wick, the Highland Archive Centre in Inverness, the Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre in Portree and the Lochaber Archive Centre in Fort William.
Richard steps into action when newly acquired deposits to the archives require conservation work, but the service is also available to the public. Advice and training can also be obtained.
Books, parchment documents, wax seals and photographs are the most common items to be conserved.
Those who attend this presentation may have items like birth certificates, wills, old photos, and films. Richard’s talk will cover their safe storage, display, and handling and what to do if they begin to deteriorate.
The free online virtual event is at 7pm on Tuesday, February 11 and registration is essential.
