The Fishermen's Mission charity is seeking creative talents to help it put together a calendar for 2022.

The calendar competition has a mission objective to use artwork representing each season and reflecting the theme “When the Boat comes in – British fishing lives through the year”.

And, apart from painting and other visual art forms, the competition also welcomes fishy recipes from entrants.

The Mission's branch superintendent based at Scrabster, Jackie Dodds, said she was really excited when she heard about the calendar competition as Caithness has "such a vibrant art scene".

"I am sure we will get many entries from our fantastic local artists and the fishing around our coastline is second to none, so I wouldn't be surprised if we get a few well-used family recipes too. The Fishermen's Mission calendar is very popular and will of course be available locally later this year so let's hope we see some local contributions being successful.

"Anyone stuck at home under Covid rules should use the opportunity to get the paintbrushes out or maybe give cooking a go - a new hobby perhaps?"

Jackie also wants to draw attention to a Fish Mish sea shanty that staff at the charity posted on its Facebook page.

"Who would have thought we had so much musical talent within the Mission? I must admit that listening to it a few times, it's kind of stuck in my head now," said Jackie.

"It really is quite catchy and I am also in awe when something like this gets put together online. It's a little bit of fun at a time when everyone is missing out on so much due to Covid."

The Fishermen's Mission charity fights poverty and despair in the UK's fishing communities by providing emergency and welfare support to fishermen and their families.

Jackie says that local fishermen seeking advice on these matters can call her on 07774116386 or the Mission's head office on Freephone 08006341020.

"Our service is confidential and no problem is too small. We will be happy to hear from you."
