A Christmas toy appeal has landed a welcome boost of £1000 thanks to the generosity of a number of Scrabster-based companies.

After seeing a poster advertising the Caithness FM annual appeal for gifts, William Calder, of Scrabster Seafoods Ltd, decided he would like to do something to help.

The Boy Andrew was landing fish in Friday's auction and Andrew Bremner of the Bremner Fishing Company agreed to donate a box with the money raised going towards buying toys and other presents for distribution to local underprivileged children.

The box sold for £1000, made up of donations from fish traders in the market consisting of Scrabster Seafoods, H & D Calder, Thomson International Ltd, JPL Shellfish, Fish in Creiff, Bells Seafood, John S Duncan Ltd, D Steven & Son, the Bremner Fishing Company and Hugh Simpson (Contractors) Ltd.

A cheque was later given to Caithness FM presenter Kenny McArthur for the purchase of gifts for children.

This year, due to the extra difficulties experienced by many families, Caithness FM is extending the appeal to try and reach children who do not normally come under the social work umbrella.

Gifts, ranging from toys to toiletries are provided to all ages, from babies to teenagers living throughout Caithness.

Contributions are accepted until Thursday, December 17, and can be handed in to various collection points in Wick, Thurso and Dunbeath. More information can be found on the Caithness FM Facebook page.
