A driver who gave a friend a lift ended up being charged with careless driving after the vehicle hit black ice and left the road, Wick Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday.

The court heard that Allana Macleod (33) struck a fence after losing control at Mid Clyth on the A9.

Fiscal David Barclay described the offence, which occurred on April 10, as being at the lower end of the careless driving scale, but added: "The accused's fault lay in not recognising how treacherous road conditions were at the time."

Macleod, of Mowat Place, Lybster, pleaded guilty. She was fined £200 and incurred three penalty points.
