The 18-year-old’s trial was scheduled to take place on Tuesday but Sheriff Neil Wilson allowed a continuation of the case after an application by Miss Stewart to further investigate matters.

Coghill, of Lord Thurso Court, Thurso, pleaded not guilty to the charge that he used his car with a defective tyre with a tread of less than the legal minimum of 1.6 millimetres, on January 15, last year, on the A882 near Watten, contrary to the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use Regulations) Act of 1986.

A new trial date of March 18 was fixed.
