SENIOR pupils in Caithness have come top of the class in their exam results with one depute head teacher describing them as "one of the best we have seen."

Thirty-one S4 pupils at Wick High achieved seven National 5 passes with 14 students getting five Higher passes.

In Thurso, 39 S4 pupils achieved seven National 5 passes with 22 students getting five Higher passes. More than 4500 young people across the Highlands had improved attainment.

Shona Laybourne (acting) depute head teacher at Wick High said: "We are very proud of our senior pupils, who have negotiated their first ever set of formal exams. Results are extremely encouraging with the vast majority of pupils achieving the results required to move forward with their learning at college, university or an apprenticeship.

"We are delighted to say that our S4 cohort have performed very well, with 31 pupils achieving seven National 5 passes. Notable achievements include Emma Paton, Liky Sung and Ewan Begg who all achieved seven A passes.

"Fourteen pupils achieved five Higher level passes, with Ewan Bartlett achieving 5 A passes in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Human Biology and Physics.

"One further exceptional achievement was from S6 pupil Eve Watt who achieved three Advanced Higher band A1 (upper A) passes in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Ewan Bartlett was on a plane to London for a summer school when he got the results. "It was the strongest feeling of relief I have ever felt. I am hoping to go to Glasgow University to study medicine and that requires five A's. Chemistry and biology were definitely a struggle throughout the year but my revision luckily paid dividends."

Eve Watt: "I'm really happy with my results, I was so pleased when I saw them. In September I'm going to the university of Glasgow to study medicine."

Anne Nicoll, depute head teacher at Thurso High school: "Senior pupils have achieved an excellent set of results this year despite it being the first time they have sat formal SQA examinations due to the pandemic. Pupils from across all year groups worked extremely hard and this has been demonstrated in one of the best sets of results we have seen. Special mentions go to those pupils who have overcome difficult circumstances but attained excellent results.

Those S5 pupils with outstanding attainment at Higher include, Cody Allan, Ben Brown, Leah Calder, Ashleigh Coghill, Hannah Dunnett, Caitlin Gunn, Kyle Leavesley, Thomas Mackay, Hannah Mackenzie, Innes Morgan, Natalie Polson and Lewis Sutherland – all achieving five As.

At National 5, outstanding attainment of S4 pupils with all As include, Kiera Bain, Luke Chesters, Morven Cumming, Kirsty Henderson, Annelise Hymers-Mackintosh, Ava Mackay, Craig Matthews, Charlize McPhee, Bethany Nuttall, Calum Prideaux, Kyle Sinclair, Robert Stolde, Ross Sutherland, Darryl Wilson and Mykhailo Yatsiuta.

Kyle Leavesley said: "I’m delighted with my results and would like to thank the school and its staff for consistently managing to help us cope and power through the difficulties the last few years have presented."

Natalie Polson said: "I am so pleased with my results especially considering how difficult the past few years have been. I couldn’t have achieved them without the support of Thurso High school and it’s amazing staff."

Ashleigh Coghill said: "Sitting my first proper exams this year seemed like a very daunting prospect, but I am extremely grateful to all those involved in the exam process at Thurso High, who ensured they went smoothly for us all. I’m really delighted my efforts this year have paid off in my results! Well done to everyone else too."
