Caithness Family History Society’s November meeting is to feature a talk by an archivist from National Records of Scotland.

Veronica Schreuder will give an online presentation entitled Scotland’s People: Beyond Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Scotland’s People – www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk – is the official Scottish Government website for searching government records and archives and is run by National Records of Scotland.

The statutory registers and old parish registers of births, deaths and marriages are often the first records people search when exploring their family history on the Scotland’s People site.

In her talk, Veronica will introduce record sets that might help people to further their research beyond these records.

Other information can be found in documents such as kirk session records, military service appeal tribunal papers, prison registers, lightkeeper registers and Scottish Women’s Land Army index cards.

Veronica will include a series of examples, including a selection from Caithness, to demonstrate how to access and search the records using the Scotland’s People website.

Veronica has worked as an archivist at National Records of Scotland in Edinburgh for over a decade in a variety of roles, most recently in the outreach and learning team.

In her current post, she researches and writes for the Scotland’s People website and newsletter, helps to develop exhibitions and welcomes groups of all ages to General Register House where they can discover more about the collections held in the archives.

The free online meeting takes place on Tuesday, November 12, beginning at 7pm.

Anyone wishing to book a place should email Janet Mowat (jsmowat25@btinternet.com) before Friday, November 8.

Caithness Family History Society has a website – www.caithnessfhs.org.uk – and a Facebook page.
