Caithness-based eco-home designer Thermohaus is celebrating the delivery of its first project.

The business provides a modular design concept for energy-efficient timber frame kit homes, designed specifically for the self-builder.

The first project was delivered to a client in Keiss and four others are planned.

Commercial director Peter Body said: “Thermohaus was established last year but by the time you’ve gone through planning and the other regulatory processes it takes time to get the ball rolling, particularly when offering something a little different. And the coronavirus lockdown has not helped.

“Although this is the first, we have another four projects in the pipeline and are looking forward to seeing the business achieve steady growth over time.”

Client Alan Bain works offshore and Thermohaus is also providing a project management service to ensure the build goes smoothly in his absence.

Technical director Jonathan Miller, who will act as project manager, explained: “There are a number of design features that require particular attention to detail. Thermohaus adopts a ‘fabric first’ approach, meaning there is a focus on providing high levels of insulation and airtightness.

“Typically, Thermohaus offers levels of energy efficiency that are nearly twice as good as current building regulations, with a significant reduction in running costs.”

This is also a first for Mr Bain, who has not self-built before.

He said: “I was very grateful for the 70 years' combined experience which the Thermohaus directors have. They kept me right through the design process and dealt with all the necessary statutory consents on my behalf. I’m very excited that we are now on site and can’t wait to move in.”
