Bystanders were concerned when their attention was drawn to Alistair Henderson as they thought he had been drinking.

When he got into a van in Macarthur Street, Wick, on October 11, 2019, and drove off, one of them contacted the police.

Officers caught up with the 47-year-old at his home in Haster and he was subsequently charged with drink-driving.

Henderson pleaded guilty at Wick Sheriff Court last week and was fined £450 and banned from driving for a year.

A breath-alcohol reading of 65mcg was reduced to 50mcg to take account of alcohol consumed by Henderson after he reached his home at Fountain Square, Haster.

Pleas of not guilty to failing to identify the driver and failing to co-operate with a breath test were accepted by Fiscal David Barclay.

Sheriff Andrew Berry observed that Henderson had a previous conviction for a similar offence in 2008 but added: "I will deal with this case solely on its merits."
