A "classic case of road rage" led to one driver assaulting another, Wick Sheriff Court heard last week.

It resulted in Jamie Sutherland (28) being charged with assault. He pleaded guilty and will be sentenced next month.

Outlining the circumstances of the incident, which occurred late on the night of January 22, on Princes Street, Thurso, Fiscal David Barclay said that the two drivers, who were not known to each other, were involved in "some sort of a dispute" or "difference of opinion" after they stopped their vehicles.

Sutherland, of Orkney View, Brims, Forss, lashed out at the other driver, punching him repeatedly.

Mr Barclay added: "It is a case that perhaps falls into the category of a classic road rage, one of these unfortunate incidents."

Sheriff Neill Kinnear called for a background report, noting that Sutherland had convictions for assault on his offending record and was subject to a bail order at the time.

The accused will be sentenced on June 1 after the sheriff considers a background report.
